Zambian minister disowns Facebook account

Zambia's minister of defence and security, Edgar Lungu, has disowned a Facebook account that proclaims that his 'intentions' to contest the 2016 presidential elections.

The Facebook account has fueled speculation on the fast growing succession debate in the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) as President Michael Sata's state of health reportedly deteriorates.

A number of ministers in the PF are fighting over who should succeed Sata in case of an election.

But Lungu has said he does not own the Facebook account and that the creation of the page is 'malicious'.

Lungu said the Facebook account does not have his consent, and that he has just learnt about it.

"Let me warn those behind the Facebook account that soon their maneuvers would be brought to light and attempts to drag my name and those of other people into imaginary succession battles would not yield the desired results," Lungu said.
