The Zambian government's decision to split the Ministry of Communication, Works and Supply has unsettled opposition political parties who now accuse the country's President of being extravagant.
President Edgar Lungu has decided to divide the Ministry of Communication into two in a bid to promote operational efficiency.
He said he wants the Ministry to provide policies that attract more investment in the telecom sector.
But the country's largest opposition, the United Party for National Development (UPND), said it has mixed feelings over the move.
UPND deputy spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo said the decision to split the Ministry will be a drain on the country's resources much as it is meant to improve operational efficiency.
He said, "the splitting of the ministries will require a lot of money which would have gone into other developmental needs."
Charles Milupi, president of the opposition Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD) said as a party they fail to understand the government's decision.
"The decision shows a serious lack of fiscal discipline on the part of the President," Milupi said.
The World Bank has equally warned the Zambian government that the decision will have a long-term impact on the country's economy. The global finance body says this is because much of the country's money will go towards the wage bill.
