The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has named Zambia's first lady Dr Christine Kaseba as it ambassador for e-health.

As a special envoy of e-health, Kaseba is expected to contribute to raising awareness of technology for health especially in low-resource-settings.

The ITU said its decision to name Kaseba as e-health envoy is based on her being an advocate for health at regional and global levels.

The global telecommunications body also said Kaseba had a vision of how technology could accelerate achievement of health-related millennium development goals.

In accepting the appointment, Kaseba said it was important to embrace ICT in the health sector because through technology, the world was more connected than ever-before.

She said the ITU has been promoting the use of digital tools in enhancing access to healthcare in different parts of the world.

Kaseba also said that Zambia had been promoting the use of ICTs in facilitating access to expert care to rural communities and that the Zambian government had been installing communication towers in rural areas in order to make communication easier.

"Zambia has been promoting the use of ICTs in facilitating access to expert care to rural communities. The Zambian government had also been installing communication towers in rural areas in order to make communication easier. I will work tirelessly to serve communities on health-related matters," Kaseba said.
