Telecom Egypt has conducted a trial of mobile services using upper 6 GHz (U6GHz) spectrum, in cooperation with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and Huawei.

Telecom Egypt says the trial is the first of its kind in Egypt and Africa.

The NTRA confirmed the trial involved operating a mobile base station using the 6 GHz band and conducting a data call over the spectrum.

Tamer El Mahdi, managing director and chief executive officer of Telecom Egypt, also confirmed the successful trial, saying it reflects the company’s efforts to explore new telecommunications technologies.

El Mahdi said the technology would help deliver a “better customer experience, while preparing our network and capabilities for future needs”.

“It also underscores our strategy to explore new opportunities that strengthen our digital capabilities and further reinforce Telecom Egypt’s role in developing Egypt’s digital infrastructure and supporting the country’s digital transformation journey,” El Mahdi said in a  LinkedIn post.

The trial, conducted using Huawei equipment, achieved data transfer speeds of approximately 1.7Gbps per user, according to Telecom Egypt, highlighting the band’s potential to deliver high-speed connectivity.

The spectrum also creates opportunities to expand network capacity and enhance service quality, particularly in areas with high traffic density, the NTRA said.

The telecoms regulator added: “The band is among the latest globally recognised frequency ranges nominated to support high-capacity mobile services, keeping pace with international developments in 5G and next-generation technologies."

The 6 GHz spectrum supports data-intensive applications such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, virtual and augmented reality, and cloud computing.
