The Ministry of Communications and digital Transformation in Mozambique has inaugurated a solar-powered data centre at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in Maputo to modernise public services and strengthen the digital economy.
The facility was launched at UEM's main campus by minister of communications and digital transformation Américo Muchanga, who said universities must lead in producing innovation and skills to accelerate national digital transformation.
The data centre operates on a solar power system, reducing reliance on the main electricity grid to offset the high energy consumption associated with artificial intelligence (AI) processing.
"Our challenge is not to block AI, but to ensure that it is at the service of our economy, the improvement of public services and national development," said Muchanga.
He went on say that digital transformation requires sustained investment in cybersecurity and emerging technologies, supported by collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector.
Vice-chancellor of the university, professor Manuel Guilherme Júnior stated that the new centre is part of a set of investments the institution is carrying out to strengthen its scientific and technological capabilities, highlighting the recent inauguration of the Robotics and automation Laboratory and the opening, this month, of an AI and Robotics Room.
“The new infrastructure, combined with the guidelines that the university is preparing for the responsible use of AI, will allow consolidating a technological ecosystem capable of strengthening teaching, research, innovation and the provision of digital services.”
The facility increases capacity to host government systems, improves internal network cybersecurity, and supports advanced computing projects across the country.
