Kenya accelerates fibre connectivity initiative
Kenya intends to connect over 700 government institutions this year through its ambitious national optic fibre cable backbone Infrastructure initiative.
The move is part of the Kenyan government's Digital Superhighway plan, which prioritises the installation of 100,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable and the establishment of 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots, as well as digital village smart hubs across the country.
This year's goal is to connect 754 institutions to fibre. These include 377 locations in Western County, 128 in Kakamega, 116 in Bungoma, 81 in Busia, and 52 in Vihiga.
In 2024, approximately 278 institutions were connected, including 91 in Kakamega, 83 in Bungoma, 54 in Vihiga, and 50 in Busia.
The information was disclosed by William Kabogo Gitau, cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, following a briefing by directors in the ministry.
“The ministry is building capacity to utilise digital technology and tackle possible challenges. The ministry will lead from the front by on-boarding all services on digital platforms.” Gitau said.
