Kenya hails BPO industry as a saving grace in job creation
Kenya is increasing its attempts to become a global hub for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), to offer real job possibilities for the youth, particularly those entering the workforce for the first time.
This is according to Kenya's principal secretary of state for ICT and the digital economy, John Kipchumba Tanui.
Tanui said last week after Teleperformance UKISSA, a global digital business services company, announced plans to expand operations in the East African country and hire 5000 locals.
On Friday, the state department of ICT and digital economy hosted a strategic partnerships event recognising progress in Kenya's BPO sector.
Dr James Mworia, Centum CEO, attended a dinner honouring Gary Slade, CEO of Teleperformance UKISSA.
Tanui said: “The event, hosted at the TRIFIC North Tower Special Economic Zone Building in Two Rivers, marked a significant milestone: the entry of Teleperformance, the world’s leading BPO company, into Kenya.”
He continued: “This historic step underscores Kenya’s journey toward becoming a global hub for BPO, creating meaningful employment opportunities for our youth, especially those entering the workforce for the first time.
“Teleperformance renowned for its expertise in customer experience management, digital transformation solutions, and back-office support. Their decision to establish operations in Kenya reinforces our nation’s strategic position as a premier outsourcing destination in Africa.”
According to Tanui, Kenya's continued efforts to improve the investment climate, particularly for technology-driven enterprises, are delivering promising results.
He explained: “To support this growth, we are accelerating fiber connectivity projects to ensure BPO companies can set up operations in any part of the country.
"Additionally, the establishment of 1450 digital hubs—one in every ward—will open doors for establishment of local BPO companies by entrepreneurs and even our diaspora professionals and those returning home to contribute to Kenya’s economic transformation.
“This partnership is a testament to Kenya’s potential to lead in the global BPO market, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our economy and communities.”
