Ethio Telecom launches second EV charging station in Addis Ababa
Ethio Telecom has unveiled a second ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Addis Ababa to further accelerate Ethiopia’s eMobility future.
The telecommunications giant’s CEO Frehiwot Tamiru hailed the development as a bold commitment towards supporting Ethiopia’s growing EV ecosystem.
“This initiative aligns with Ethio Telecom’s vision as a leading digital solutions provider and our principle of providing new opportunities and is part of our Digital Ethiopia journey,” said Tamiru in statement.
Located on the Megenagna to Bole road, the new station is set to enhance the charging infrastructure as Ethiopia embraces electric mobility with EV usage increasing in the country.
Ethio Telecom has quickly added a second facility just weeks after unveiling a newly-built ultra-fast EV charging station in mid-February. The latest infrastructure is intended to address the growing demand for quick, efficient, and smart charging options.
“This new station builds on the success of Ethio Telecom’s first EV charging facility along the Bole-Megenagna route, which has already helped reduce an estimated 521 074.23kg of CO2 emissions since its launch in February. This environmental impact is equivalent to planting over 2 600 trees, thanks to the service of 14 280 electric vehicles and the delivery of 376 574.72kWh of electricity,” said Tamiru.
According to the telco giant, the new station features 16 high-capacity chargers that can serve both European version EVs and those with EU-standard fast-charging requirements. This ensures compatibility with a wide range of EV models. In total, Ethio Telecom’s charging network can now accommodate up to 32 vehicles simultaneously, allowing for faster service and greater convenience for drivers. The station’s spacious design ensures ample room for vehicles, easing concerns over congestion and offering better accessibility.
"Smart, AI-powered charging technology underpins the station’s capabilities, optimising energy delivery and charging speed based on each vehicle’s battery needs," said Tamiru.
The chargers, capable of up to 600kW for ultra-fast recharges, can fully power vehicles in just 15 minutes.
The telco says this is especially beneficial for city buses, enabling them to quickly get back on the road and continue their services.
Additionally, it adds, the station provides a seamless digital experience through Ethio Telecom’s telebirr platform, facilitating cashless payments and real-time monitoring of charging activity.
