Security guard Emmamuel Siamulu has been named winner of the repeated MTN Zambia 'Win Beeg' summer competition worth over $25,000, following a fraud scam that dogged the competition earlier this year.
The MTN ‘Beeg’ competition in Zambia was surrounded by scandal earlier this year, after allegations emerged that the winner may have been fraudulently selected because she was the girlfriend of an IT specialist working for the telco.
The MTN employee who was implicated in the matter, Jones Ilukena, and the winner of the competition Muchana Simuna are already appearing in court of the scandal.
Ilukena is accused of having developed software capable of adjusting the mobile operator’s computer system to make his girlfriend the winner of the ‘Let’s Go Beeg’ promotion.
Subsequently, the allegations forced MTN to announce that the company would rerun the competition, using a ‘foolproof’ system to avoid tampering.
MTN Zambia has however announced the ‘genuine” winner of the competition, a G3 security card in Mazabuka.
“I still can’t believe it right now that I won. I was on duty last evening [Friday] when some officials from MTN called me and said I had won K1billion in the WIN BEEG competition…I was shocked and even thought someone was telling a sick joke,” Siamulu told the Zambia Daily Newspaper.
