Kenya, Germany strengthen energy, ICT relations
Kenya and Germany are increasing their collaborations in renewable energy and information and communication technology.
Dr. Margaret Ndung'u, cabinet secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, welcomed Dr. Robert Habeck, German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, in Naivasha this week.
According to the officials, Kenya and Germany are strengthening their long-standing renewable energy collaboration, which is motivated by a shared commitment to sustainable development and climate action.
"This engagement underscores the Kenya-Germany relationship, built on mutual respect and shared values, as both nations work to address global challenges like access to clean energy and combating climate change," Ndung'u told the press.
According to the two governments, since signing a renewable energy memorandum of understanding in 2019, Kenya and Germany have worked together to advance geothermal energy at Olkaria while also developing solar, wind, and hydropower options across the country.
Meanwhile, John Tanui, principal secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, attended the Bridging Markets: German-African IT and Business Process Outsourcing Summit on Tuesday, which preceded the German-African Business Summit, which is currently taking place in Nairobi.
"By fostering partnerships with global tech firms, Kenya aims to position itself as a regional hub for technology and innovation, attracting significant investments that will bolster its ICT sector," Tanui said.
