The Zambia Telecommunication Company (Zamtel) plans to rollout Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network with Livingstone expected to be the first city to have the network in the country.
The operator has applied to the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA), the country’s telecom sector regulator, for a LTE license.
The operator said its plans are to have sites that will be able to provide the next generation of advanced mobile network in the country.
Zamtel is owned by the Zambian government.
“We asked ZICTA for frequency bands to be utilised for 4G and we are still waiting for response,” said Zamtel chief technical officer, Sydney Mupeta.
The minister of transport, communications, works and supply - Christopher Yaluma - has said Zamtel will get support for its quest to operate 4G network in the country.
Yaluma said he will personally ensure that ZICTA gives Zamtel the 4G license as soon as possible.
“ZICTA cannot stand on your way and I will ensure that the authority gives you the license as soon as possible,” Yaluma said.
