The speaker of Zambia’s national assembly has warned a lawmaker of stiffer punishment for filming and taking pictures of chaotic scenes in parliament using an Apple iPad.
Patrick Matibini has warned that it was illegal for the lawmaker to have filmed and taken pictures of proceeding of the house using an iPad without his permission.
Proceedings of the house in the last sitting were characterised by confusion and a near punch-up among lawmakers and security personnel.
Opposition lawmaker, Vincent Mwale, filmed the confusion using his iPad.
“There is no established practice that permits members (lawmakers) to take picture or film the proceedings of the house without the authority of the speaker. A repeat of similar offence in future will attract stiffer penalty,” Matibini said.
The confusion and chaotic scenes in the house were caused by protests by opposition lawmakers as a way of pressing the Zambian government to release the country’s draft constitution.
The Zambian government has so far refused to release the draft constitution, despite spending huge sums of money putting it together.
This forced opposition lawmakers to stage protests in the house for days as a way of pressing the Zambian government to release the constitution.
