To meet the 2013 and 2015 digital migration deadlines, Zambia’s government has approved technical and policy guidelines for its migration programme.

Amos Malupenga, permanent secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said the approval of the policy guidelines means that government is ready to embark on the implementation of the digital migration exercise.

“I want to state that cabinet has approved technical and policy guidelines for Zambia’s digital migration programme in line with both the SADC and ITU deadlines,” he said.

Malupenga also said the country’s taskforce on digital migration is expected to scale up the implementation process including extensive public awareness programmes.

The Zambian government set up the taskforce in August 2010 with a mandate of providing the roadmap and ensuring that the country migrates successfully on time.

Zambia’s target is to migrate from analogue to digital television by 31 December 2013 and to switch off all analogue television transmission by the same date in 2014 ahead of the ITU deadline.
