The Zambian government has launched an e-learning programme as a method of training nurses and midwives in the country.

Government said it plans to enroll and train over 6,000 nurses in the next six years through e-learning.

The Minister of Health Dr Joseph Kasonde added that the e-learning programme will be approached in phases starting with five schools of nursing in Ndola, Kitwe, Mufulira, Chipata and Livingstone.

Kasonde said this means that each registered school of nursing will have to enroll not less than fifty students initially and eventually increase as they gain experience.

Kasonde has also directed the Ministry of Labour, which conducts aptitude tests, and the Examinations Council of Zambia to verify results for the provisionally selected candidates to work with the General Nursing Council.

Kasonde said his ministry was also looking at ways to extend the e-learning programme to cover even the training of general clinical officers in the country.

“The Ministry of Health will support the efforts of collaborating with partners such as Child Fund in looking at ways of extending the use of e-learning in training general clinical officers as well,” Kasonde said.
