Telecom Namibia has announced that all new mobile base stations it is currently building are 5G-enabaled.

In addition, the mobile network operator is working with the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MICT) to establish a national standard for entry-level broadband of at least 25 megabits per second (Mbps) for both download and upload rates.

This was revealed following a meeting between officials from the government and Telecom Namibia at the latter's headquarters in Windhoek late Tuesday.

The discussions focused on the government's ambitions to achieve 100 percent network coverage by 2030 (current coverage is 93 percent of the population), the importance of bringing some underserved regions into the national coverage tier, and the necessity to strengthen national data protection and combat cybercrime.

The MICT executive director, Audrin Mathe, emphasised the need of state-owned companies like Telecom Namibia aligning their strategic objectives with the national agenda.

Dr Stanley Shanapinda, CEO of Telecom Namibia, welcomed the group, with the rollout of 5G base stations being the highlight of the announcements.

"This visit by Dr Mathe and the MICT delegation marks a significant milestone in our collective journey to build a robust and secure digital future for Namibia," said Shanapinda.

"Our discussions today (Tuesday) have laid a strong foundation for intensified collaboration, ensuring that together, we can empower every Namibian through cutting-edge ICT."
