South Sudan says its digital transformation program is on track, despite years of conflict.

The country is hosting the 30th annual Assemblies of the East African Communications Organisation, which Michael Makuei Lueth, minister of ICT and postal services, is presiding over until Friday.

"I am pleased to report that we have made some modest achievements despite the common challenges," he told delegates in the capital, Juba, on Wednesday.

The event is held under the theme, "Shaping the Future of the East African Region through Digital Transformation."

"Currently, the government of South Sudan is implementing the revised ICT Policy of 2012, the Digital Government Strategy 2023, South Sudan Digital Roadmap 2024 and now developing the new South Sudan Digital Transformation Strategy," Lueth said.

According to Lueth, the National Broadband Backbone is being implemented in collaboration with the International Development Association and the World Bank.

He also stated that his government had signed a memorandum of understanding with Kenya to extend the fibre cable from Kenya's border, a distance of over 2,420 km, over the next four years.

"This project will ensure access to the fundamental infrastructure and tools of the digital society. It will be one of the most significant investments our country has made for its future generations."
