South Korea has affirmed support for the digitalisation of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) as part of the agency’s modernisation programme.
The partnership aims to strengthen technology transfer, infrastructure development and skills capacity as KPA advances its digital transformation agenda.
The commitment follows a meeting between South Korea’s ambassador to Kenya, Kang Hyung-shik, and KPA CEO Captain William Ruto in Mombasa this week.
KPA managing director is not related to President William Ruto.
Kang said the longstanding bilateral relationship continues to create opportunities for cooperation in infrastructure development, innovation and knowledge exchange.
“South Korea will continue supporting KPA through the sharing of advanced port technologies, digital solutions and best practices in maritime operations,” he said.
Ruto welcomed the partnership, noting that KPA has benefited from relationships with Korean shipping lines, logistics firms and maritime stakeholders supporting growth in international trade through the Port of Mombasa.
He said the agency will continue strengthening collaboration with Korean ports to accelerate digitalisation, improve service delivery and enhance the port’s competitiveness as a regional gateway.
The Port of Mombasa serves as the primary maritime gateway for Kenya and landlocked countries including Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan, connecting to more than 80 global ports.
The collaboration reflects broader efforts to modernise port operations through digital systems, automation and improved logistics management.
The engagement builds on growing economic ties between Kenya and South Korea.
It follows President Ruto’s 2024 state visit to Seoul, which focused on expanding trade, investment and technology cooperation.
Kenya and South Korea have maintained diplomatic and economic relations for more than six decades, with cooperation spanning digital transformation, infrastructure and agriculture.
Recent partnerships include technology initiatives at Konza Technopolis, such as the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and electronics manufacturing projects.
