Egypt is taking steps to secure its digital future, as the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and global software giant SAP are collaborating to strengthen the country's digital sovereignty.
The discussion between government representatives and a SAP delegation led by Augusta Spinelli, regional president for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, focused on cloud computing as the cornerstone of Egypt's efforts to tighten control over its national data, according to the ministry.
The ministry said by hosting critical apps and data on SAP platforms within the North African state, the government hopes to keep complete control over Egypt's digital infrastructure.
Raafat Hendy, Egypt's minister of ICT, stressed the importance of digital sovereignty in increasing the competitiveness of the ICT sector.
He noted that creating a secure, business-friendly environment not only protects national data but also enables international firms to expand their operations, ultimately increasing Egypt’s exports of digital services.
To support this sovereign framework, the engagements addressed the rollout of advanced AI-driven features specifically tailored for the Egyptian market.
These technological advancements are being paired with a robust commitment to digital capacity building.
Through specialised training programmes, SAP and the MCIT aim to equip Egyptian youth with the high-level technical skills required to manage these sovereign cloud solutions, ensuring they are ready for the global job market.
“Such efforts contribute to shaping highly specialised digital talent that supports ICT companies’ expansion plans in Egypt. This reinforces the country’s position as a secure international hub for outsourcing and IT offshoring services,” asserted Hendy.
The collaboration extends to a study of job market needs within the SAP ecosystem, ensuring that the local workforce can sustain the nation’s digital independence in the long term, noted the ministry.
Spinelli reaffirmed the firm’s commitment to this vision, stating that the company aims to contribute to Egypt’s ongoing efforts to expand its technological capabilities.
“Egypt is a key and promising market for SAP,” she added. She further noted that the company seeks to create sustainable economic opportunities through these innovation-driven initiatives.
Mohammed Samy, MD of SAP Egypt, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of investing in the next generation.
He reaffirmed that SAP’s plan to step up investment in youth empowerment is essential for thriving in a rapidly evolving and increasingly sovereign digital economy.
