Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has 842,260 Twitter followers overtaking Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta (781,929 followers), according to the latest Burson-Marsteller Twiplomacy.

The survey also puts Kagame’s account as the most active in the world at 86% reply rate to tweets.

The annual Twiplomacy index shows how world governments use the social media platform in communicating with their followers.

Burson-Marsteller said that 78% of the African governments use Twitter in one way or the other.

“This study illustrates that governments are becoming more savvy and professional in their use of social media,” said Jeremy Galbraith, chief executive officer of Burson-Marsteller Europe, Middle East and Africa.

“It is interesting to see how foreign ministries have honed their social strategies and built substantial dedicated teams to manage their online channels. We believe corporations can learn a lot from governments and their leaders on Twitter.”

Globally, Barack Obama is the most followed world leader with 57 million followers, seconded by Pope Francis with 20 million followers.

The study looked at 669 government accounts from 169 nations and was compiled throughout March 2015.

* At the time of publishing this article, Kagame had approximately 958,000 followers while Kenyatta had 828,000.
