Namibia has pledged to equip its youth with the necessary skills to compete in an increasingly digital global economy.
President Nandi Netumbo-Ndaitwah stated that this is part of efforts to encourage local youth to pursue jobs of the future in tech.
She delivered the closing address at the inaugural Public-Private Forum held this past weekend in Windhoek.
Netumbo-Ndaitwah said: “Namibia is part and parcel of the global village, and, therefore connectivity and digitilisation cannot be overemphasised.
“We agree there is a need to align our education system with the needs of the labour market and equip our young people with practical and digital skills. In this way, we will build confidence, and a generation ready to compete in the labour market.”
The president noted that Namibia was endowed with essential minerals that were in high demand around the world.
Uranium and lithium are examples of strategic minerals used in the shift to a green energy system and advanced technology.
“If well-managed, mining can be a true game-changer to lift our economy to new heights and improve livelihoods across the country,” Netumbo-Ndaitwah said.
She highlighted the need to develop specialized skills that this sector requires.
“Namibia must be equipped to take up the high value skills of the future, rather than depend on outside expertise,” the president added.
