Namibia has made headway in launching the electronic identity documents (EIDs).

The launch is part of the 2026/27 budget, which was presented last month. An EID is a secure digital solution that uses an app or a smart card to verify an individual online or in person.

Lucia Lipumbu, minister of home affairs, immigration, safety, and security, issued an update over the weekend following the most recent cabinet meeting headed by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Her ministry has stepped up efforts to update its systems.

“We are also progressing very well with our electronic identity documents, known as EID,” Lipumbi said. She was speaking at the Government Information Centre in Windhoek, the capital.

“We are expected to launch this in the course of the 2026/27 financial year,” the minister disclosed. “This will mark a significant step towards modernising identity management systems because this can be used within the government and at the private sector level.”

Lipumbi further revealed that in 2025, the government issued 117,175 national IDs and 126,737 birth certificates.

Additionally, during the period, 682 identity cards were issued to refugees that the Southern African country classifies as “African guests.”

The IDs enable the beneficiaries to access education, banking services, employment and other essential services that the Southern African country offers as the host nation.
