Most teenagers in South Africa are ‘concerned’ about viewing sexually explicit content online, according to a Mxit poll.
To mark Safer Internet Day (SID), South African mobile social network Mxit has released the findings of an interactive opinion poll that it has ran on its online safety advice app, which has notched up 114,916 users.
The app was launched earlier this year in support of Safer Internet Day on February 11.
The Mxit poll then consisted of a targeted sample of users: 98% aged between 13 and 17.
And according to Mxit, the poll received 9,240 poll responses and 3,026 comments on content pages.
Of all the concerns, 27% of subscribers said that seeing sexually explicit content online was the most concerning to them.
Other results of the poll indicate that 25% of respondents viewed cyber bullying as their main concern, while 20% said their parents finding out what they do on the internet is what they feared most.
Meanwhile, 18% cited strangers finding their personal information as concerning.
Safer Internet Day is a worldwide initiative in which the likes of young people, teachers and educators mark the day and aim to work together to build a better internet for all.
