South African social network Mxit has earmarked West African nation Nigeria as a focus area, according to the company’s chief executive officer Francois Swart.

But in an emailed response, Swart is tight-lipped about what the nature of a Nigerian launch for Mxit could be.

Nigeria has over 100 million mobile connections.

“Nigeria is a focus area for us, but that is all I can say at the moment,” Swart told ITWeb Africa.

Swart’s comments follow Mxit’s expansion plans, which kick-started with last month’s launch of the instant messaging application in India, which has a mobile market size of over 900 million connections according to the GSMA.

Mxit also opened offices in India while its marketing campaign included involvement from former coach and opening batsman of South Africa’s cricket team Gary Kirsten.

Meanwhile, at last year’s AfricaCom conference, Mxit’s chief product officer Vincent Maher indicated that Nigeria is also on the social network’s radar.

Maher said that both India and Nigeria are in the company’s sights.

According to Mxit, it has 7.4 million monthly active users across Africa, of which 6.5 million are in South Africa.
