Special offers and discounts are coming to South African users of instant messaging app Mxit, after the mobile social network has partnered with in-store mobile transaction provider wiGroup.

Dubbed ‘Deals on Mxit’, the service is planned to offer discounts that range up to 25% on products such as airtime to selected goods and services.

The service is planned to be available on smartphones and feature phones.

“Mxit enables brands to start conversations and build relationships with millions of young people”, says Mxit chief executive officer, Francois Swart, in a statement.

The offering is set to work on wiGroup’s ‘wiPlatform’: a point-of-sale integrated, in-store mobile transaction solution for retailers, brands, agencies, mobile communities and banks.

According to a press statement, wiPlatform has a national footprint in South Africa with clients that include Pick ‘n Pay, Shoprite Checkers, Col’Cacchio, Hungry Lion and Primi Piatti.

The “Deals on Mxit” app lets users choose the deal they want to redeem. A one-time-code is then generated and entered in-store at the point-of-sale to enable the discount.
