MTN Group Fintech has entered a strategic partnership with global digital payment provider Ant International to accelerate the expansion of its mobile money (MoMo) ecosystem.

According to the telco, the collaboration will debut in Nigeria next quarter, introducing a fintech super-app platform designed to anchor a next-generation ecosystem for digital finance, lifestyle, and commerce services.

By leveraging Ant International’s technology, MTN aims to upgrade MoMo through a mini-app platform featuring enhanced fraud prevention and advanced consumer engagement tools.

The announcement follows strong financial momentum for the operator. MTN's latest Q1 2026 trading update showed quarterly fintech revenue grew 22.4% year-over-year to $461.3 million (R7.6 billion).

This growth was driven by a 15.8% surge in transaction volumes to 6.3 billion, pushing total quarterly transaction value up 32.8% to $163 billion. Active MoMo users reached 67.4 million (an 8.2% increase), powered by strong performance across West Africa.

In MTN Nigeria alone, local fintech revenue jumped 77.9% to $47.2 million (₦64.2 billion).

The upcoming deployment is expected to improve MoMo's transaction speeds and systemic reliability across the country.

According to Ant International, the joint initiative combines MTN's local market insights with advanced technical infrastructure to build a scalable digital environment for merchants and consumers alike.

The initiative reinforces MTN Group Fintech’s broader expansion strategy in Sub-Saharan Africa, which the GSMA identifies as the world’s most active mobile money region.

"This partnership marks an important milestone in our ambition to help shape Africa’s digital financial future through our One Big Tech strategy," said Serigne Dioum, CEO of MTN Group Fintech.

Ralph Mupita, MTN Group president and CEO added: "This partnership aligns with MTN Group’s ambition of leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress by leveraging scale, technology, and strong global partnerships.”

“It reflects our commitment to transforming the customer experience at scale by delivering a more seamless, secure, and intuitive MoMo platform that advances digital inclusion and expands economic participation."
