MTN Group has thrown its weight behind the 2025 Economic Governance School as part of its push to empower African institutions and tech-driven inclusive development.
The high-level initiative held in Ghana last week brought together public sector leaders from Ghana, South Africa, and Kenya for a week of policy dialogue, peer learning, and strategic collaboration.
Executives joined government officials for sessions on AI, digital services, and infrastructure to build resilient governance models across the continent.
Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer, hailed the training that was led by South Africa’s National School of Government, Kenya School of Government, and Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, a success.
“As a Pan-African business, we understand that Africa’s growth depends not only on investment in infrastructure, but also in people and institutions,” said Morafo.
The programme’s focus on inclusive economic governance was complemented by a delegation visit to the African Continental Free Trade Area secretariat, underscoring the broader objective of building stronger and interconnected African economies.
MTN’s support came as part of its annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign that has been encouraging its employees to actively participate in community development initiatives, with a strong focus on education and socio-economic upliftment.
Participants also toured the MTN Ghana-supported Opportunities Industrialisation Centre, which provides vocational and digital skills training to empower youth.
“We believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. Education, training and strong institutions form the foundation for sustained progress,” added Morafo
MTN executives, including Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett and CIO Bernard Acquah, took part in sessions on digital transformation, AI, and infrastructure financing, offering insights into the intersection of technology and governance.
South Africa’s deputy minister of public service and administration, Pinky Kekana, described the initiative as a valuable platform for engagement on governance challenges facing Africa.
“The Economic Governance School offers a unique platform for elected and appointed public leaders to engage in critical analysis and reflective dialogue on the complex challenges confronting governance,” she said.
The telecoms giant underlined that the programme reflects its strategic commitment to strengthening institutional capacity and nurturing leadership as drivers of inclusive development across the continent.
