The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has signed new licenses that allow Mercedes-Benz to provide Internet of Things (IoT) services in Egypt, as part of a strategic effort to develop the smart vehicle ecosystem.

According to Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the move is a key component of the country's digital Egypt plan, and it marks an important milestone on the country's path to becoming a regional hub for automotive and digital innovation.

This national project intends to domesticate modern global technologies while also providing Egyptian citizens with advanced, secure digital services. The NTRA supports the safe functioning of connected vehicle services by developing clear organisational structures that correspond to international data protection and privacy standards.

The North African country began offering IoT licenses for the automobile sector in late 2025, which has already sparked a flurry of global investment.

Mercedes-Benz is among the first global brands to receive approval, alongside OnStar (General Motors), Mansour MG Automotive (IM brand), Global Auto (BMW), Alpha Ezz El-Arab (Volvo, Aston Martin, Lotus, and Lynk & Co), Egyptian International Motors (Zeekr and BAIC), Egyptian Automotive and Trading Co. (Audi, Škoda), and SMG Engineering Automotive Co. (Porsche, Scania).

The MCIT believes that these IoT services will enable drivers to use upgraded navigation, real-time tracking, and emergency relief systems in a safe and efficient manner.

Beyond convenience, these technologies are projected to significantly improve road safety by allowing vehicles to connect with infrastructure and other drivers. Furthermore, IoT connectivity improves fleet management efficiency and saves carbon emissions through improved route planning.

"The Authority continues to open the door for additional global companies to invest in IoT services and capitalise on Egypt’s digital infrastructure," the ministry stated.

Mercedes-Benz added: “This achievement reinforces our commitment to driving digital innovation, enhancing safety, and delivering connectivity for our customers.”
