Mauritius has launched an online Motor Vehicle Licence (MVL) system for taxi operators to digitalise public transport administration.

The Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation and the Ministry of Land Transport developed the portal, enabling operators to renew licences and pay road tax digitally.

Some 3 000 of the nation's 7 800 licensed taxi drivers have already registered on the platform.

The system will reduce queues at post offices and National Land Transport Authority offices while building a centralised database, said minister of information technology, communication and innovation Avinash Ramtohul.

The minister said the deployment aligns with government’s digital Transformation Blueprint to modernise public services.

The portal integrates with the KOREK super app, which hosts AI-enabled water leakage reporting, power supply updates and digital driving licence services.

Minister of Land Transport Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed, added that collaborative projects between the two ministries include cashless ticketing, smart parking applications and digital fleet management.

The government is also preparing a policy paper to regulate online taxi-booking platforms across the island nation.
