Blantyre City Council (BCC) has partnered with fintech firm OneKhusa to introduce an online platform for the payment of city rates, a move aimed at improving convenience, efficiency and transparency in municipal revenue collection.
The partnership, announced by OneKhusa makes the company the official payment partner for the council.
Under the arrangement, residents and businesses will be able to pay their municipal rates online using digital devices, eliminating the need to physically visit council offices and reduce queues at the offices.
OneKhusa said the new system will provide a faster and more secure method of settling city rates while offering instant payment confirmations and streamlined reconciliation processes.
The system is also set to enhance efficiency and transparency in municipal revenue collection.
The company noted that the platform is powered by what it describes as Malawi's first open payment API, enabling seamless integration between payment systems and public services.
According to OneKhusa, the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen digital public infrastructure and accelerate the country's digital transformation agenda.
The development comes as public institutions in Malawi increasingly adopt digital technologies to improve service delivery, enhance revenue collection and expand access to government services.
