The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are exploring new areas of collaboration to accelerate digital transformation, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), digital identity and data protection.
During discussions, the organisations identified priority areas including integrating the National Identity system for SIM card verification, promoting the responsible use of AI, strengthening data protection frameworks and expanding digital skills among young people.
The meeting also explored opportunities to jointly implement programmes to equip secondary school learners with digital skills, building on initiatives supported through MACRA's Universal Service Fund.
According to the organisations, the proposed collaboration will enhance digital literacy while preparing young people for opportunities in the country's growing digital economy.
Mayamiko Nkoloma, director general of the MACRA, said partnerships are critical to ensuring Malawi's digital transformation is secure, inclusive and responsive to emerging technologies.
"We believe collaboration is essential in promoting the secure, inclusive and responsible use of digital technologies that benefit all Malawians," said Nkoloma.
He said stronger cooperation with development partners such as UNDP would accelerate digital innovation while ensuring technology is deployed responsibly and reaches underserved communities.
Azhar Saeed Malik, digital advisor at the UNDP, said digital transformation must be built on public trust and supported by strong safeguards.
Malik said the successful adoption of digital technologies depends on protecting personal data, promoting inclusion and ensuring no one is left behind as governments increasingly adopt digital solutions.
The discussions come as Malawi continues to expand digital public infrastructure and modernise public services through technology.
Integrating the National Identity system with SIM card verification is expected to improve the integrity of telecommunications services, strengthen consumer protection and support efforts to combat identity-related fraud.
The emphasis on responsible AI also reflects growing recognition of the technology's potential to improve service delivery, education and innovation while requiring appropriate governance and ethical safeguards.
The engagement between MACRA and UNDP signals a shared commitment to innovation, digital inclusion and building the skills needed to support Malawi's technology-led development agenda.
