Kenya and South Africa are in talks to establish a digital agreement that will involve collaboration on public digital IDs.

This was discussed yesterday at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20) in Geneva, Switzerland, by Solly Malatsi, South Africa's minister of communications and digital technologies, and William Gitau, Kenya's cabinet secretary for information, communications, and the digital economy.

Phillip Tigo, Kenya's special envoy for technology, also attended.

"We agreed to re-open our ICT Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reflect fast-evolving technologies and affirmed commitments to deeper collaboration on research, start-0ups and secure infrastructure," Tigo said.

Cabinet secretary Gitau, added: “I congratulated South Africa and the minister of communications and digital technologies, Hon. Solly Malatsi, on assuming the Chair of the #WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025.

“In our bilateral meeting, we discussed finalising the Kenya–SA Digital MoU, collaboration on digital public identity, Kenya’s role in the G20 digital track, and the AI Taskforce.”
