The newly established Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kenya-AIST) is seen as a watershed moment in the country's digital development.

Located within the Konza Technopolis, it is a specialised postgraduate research university established to become a centre of excellence in science, technology, engineering and innovation.

The institution is designed to serve as the intellectual anchor of Kenya’s digital and industrial transformation under the motto, “Technology for National Transformation.”

The university was recently awarded its charter, marking a landmark achievement in the country’s efforts to strengthen research, innovation and advanced skills development.

On Wednesday, a government delegation undertook a strategic orientation and inspection tour of the newly chartered facility following the monthly Principal Secretaries’ Coordination Meeting.

Philip Thigo, special envoy on technology and digital transformation, was part of the tour.

“Kenya-AIST represents a bold national investment in scientific excellence, innovation and industrial development,” he said.

Thigo said that, as Kenya continued to strengthen its position as Africa’s Silicon Savannah, the institution would play a pivotal role in generating knowledge, nurturing talent, advancing research and creating solutions that support sustainable economic growth.

The envoy said the tour reaffirmed a collective commitment to supporting institutions that drive innovation, strengthen national competitiveness, attract investment, create opportunities for youth and accelerate the realisation of Kenya’s development agenda.

“Kenya-AIST is not simply a university,” Thigo said. “It is a strategic national asset that will help shape Kenya’s future as a globally competitive, innovation-driven economy.”

Kenya-AIST is modelled on the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), reflecting the strong relations between the two countries in technology.

Established in 1971, KAIST played a central role in South Korea’s transformation into one of the world’s leading technology and manufacturing economies.

“Kenya-AIST seeks to replicate this success by developing world-class scientific talent, strengthening research and development, promoting technology transfer and fostering innovation-driven economic growth across Kenya and Africa,” Thigo said.
