Kenya is boosting its partnership with Italy to position itself as a regional artificial intelligence (AI) hub, says the Ministry of Information, Communications and the digital Economy (MICDE).
The collaboration comes as the government bolsters its AI technical capabilities as part of the nation’s broader digital transformation journey.
Eric Juma, an ICT officer at MICDE, is currently attending the AI Policy Lab in Turin, Italy. The ministry says Juma is gaining exposure to global perspectives on how AI is reshaping labour markets, skills and economies.
“Investing in such talent is central to ensuring that Kenya not only adopts AI but actively shapes its development and governance,” says John Tanui, principal secretary, State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy.
This engagement aligns with the AI Hub for Sustainable Development, a global initiative driving industrial growth in Africa through talent development and computing infrastructure.
“Italy continues to play a strategic role as a partner, particularly through hosting the AI Policy Lab at the International Training Centre, where Kenya is actively contributing to shaping inclusive, responsible and forward-looking AI ecosystems, says Tanui.
Kenya is actively contributing to the lab to help shape inclusive, responsible and forward-looking AI ecosystems.
The government is committed to empowering its people, strengthening global partnerships and positioning Kenya at the forefront of AI innovation and policy, says Tanui.
This strategy follows recent moves by the MICDE to establish a national AI task force to oversee the ethical deployment of emerging technologies.
