Kenya has blocked more than 50 betting websites, claiming they encouraged irresponsible gambling while operating illegally in the East African country.
The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) launched the operation after the involved firms took advantage of the surge in online gambling in the east African country.
To date, 58 online gambling operators have been shut down.
“Unauthorised betting websites have sparked public outrage by operating without approval from the board,” said Peter Mbugi, CEO of BCLB.
He added: “The board has taken note of complaints from concerned citizens regarding these platforms, which exploit users by demanding money through betting schemes.”
Mbugi stated that the board's investigations found that these sites defrauded punters by taking deposits but not paying out.
“Additionally, the platforms violate the gaming regulations set by the board, necessitating their immediate shutdown. The board has determined that necessary measures must be taken against the listed websites, including their shutdown.”
