William Gitau, cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, met with a delegation from Romania yesterday.

As Kenya and other African countries become prime targets for cyber thieves, the East African country is collaborating with Safetech Innovations, a Romanian cyber security firm, to boost its national cyber resilience and safeguard digital infrastructure.

The partnership, which was initially proposed last year, relies on the two countries maintaining friendly relations under an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which establishes a framework for collaboration in important sectors such as information, and communication technology and innovation.

Kenya and Romania signed an MoU in October 2025 to strengthen cyber security, focusing on information sharing, joint incident response, and capacity building.

Kenya’s National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee and Romania's National Cyber Security Directorate led the signing .

Regarding the meeting Nairobi this week, William Gitau, Kenya cabinet secretary: ministry of information, communications and the digital economy, said: “This engagement builds on that foundation as we deepen practical collaboration in areas of mutual interest.”

He was alluding to the meeting on Tuesday, when he welcomed a delegation from Safetech Innovations and Romania's Ambassador to Kenya, Gentiana Serbu, in Nairobi.

The discussions focused on cyber security as critical problem for the East African country, especially as the government advances digital transformation.

The delegations also talked on protecting essential infrastructure, enhancing institutional capacity, and the importance of developing strong and long-term cyber resilience frameworks.

Collaboration in research and development, particularly partnerships with higher education institutions to enhance knowledge transfer and exchange of expertise, was also discussed.

“Kenya welcomes structured cooperation that strengthens our national cyber security posture and safeguards our digital transformation gains,” Gitau said after the meeting.
