Chinese telecoms equipment company Huawei has won a deal to be the sole provider of a light rail communications network system in Ethiopia's capital city Addis Ababa.
“The integrated telecommunications system will be Africa’s first comprehensive commercial eLTE communications infrastructure for urban railways built with innovative eLTE technology, high-performance storage and high-definition video surveillance,” says a Huawei statement.
eLTE technology assists with high-performance storage and high-definition video surveillance.
Other features of the light rail communications network system include multiple technologies such as a fixed and IP Telephony.
To ease traffic congestion in the capital, Ethiopia's government has invested $475 million in the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit project, which is expected to be completed by January 2015.
The first phase of the project is expected to cover 31 kilometers with South-North and East-West railway lines. A control centre and 39 stations are also part of the project.
Once completed, it will run at 80 km/h and carry 60,000 passengers per hour.
Huawei's full range Mass Transit eLTE Multi-Service Unified Bearer (eLTE-MT) communications solution will facilitate communications with advanced technologies, a company statement reads.
Furthermore, the subsystems are expected to facilitate dispatching, multi-service bearing, surveillance, data storage and unified communications.
