Guodong Network Communication Group (Guodong) is exploring investment opportunities within the Kenyan digital landscape.

A delegation from the Chinese private telecommunications tower infrastructure service provider met government officials in Nairobi on Thursday to discuss strategic partnerships.

John Tanui, principal secretary for the State Department for Information and Communication Technology and the Digital Economy, hosted the officials.

The delegation included Kobe Hu, chief executive officer of Guodong, and Shwan Fang, head of the Middle East and Africa region at Guodong.

The engagement focused on strategic areas of collaboration to accelerate Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.

Tanui says the company expressed a strong interest in investing in telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in the deployment of fibre-optic networks and the construction of tower infrastructure. These projects aim to enhance nationwide connectivity and coverage.

“This engagement provided an important platform to align their investment priorities with the Government’s Digital Superhighway Programme, which seeks to expand broadband access, strengthen digital infrastructure and drive inclusive connectivity across the country.”

Tanui went on to say the engagement provided a platform to align Guodong’s investment priorities with the government’s Digital Superhighway Programme. The programme seeks to expand broadband access, strengthen digital infrastructure, and drive inclusive connectivity across the country.

“We look forward to continued engagements to explore sustainable partnership models that will unlock these investments and further advance Kenya’s digital economy."

The Digital Superhighway initiative focuses on deploying 100 000 km of fibre-optic cables, establishing 25 000 public Wi-Fi hotspots, and creating digital hubs in all 1 450 wards in Kenya.

Founded in 1997 and established as a group in 2008, Guodong is headquartered in Shanghai. The company operates as a major private information infrastructure service provider, managing a significant portfolio of communication towers globally.
