Application programming interface (API) response times for developers, partners, and merchants have improved by up to 80% following the completion of a major Mobile Money (MoMo) cloud migration, according to a joint statement by MTN Group Fintech and Ericsson.

The cloud-native "MoMo Evolved Migration" project was completed across key African markets, including Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda.

The cloud upgrade supports MTN’s Ambition 2030 strategy, which aims to transition the telecommunications operator from a traditional connectivity provider into a digital infrastructure and fintech platform.

Following the deployment, MTN experienced reduced central processing unit (CPU) overhead and database load reductions of up to 86%.

"Through a cloud-native foundation, we are enhancing performance, strengthening resilience, and accelerating the delivery of innovative digital financial services for consumers, merchants, and partners across our markets," says Artemij Demidczyk, acting chief technology and information officer at MTN Group Fintech.

Demidczyk adds that the upgrade supports the company's long-term plan to scale its African digital financial services.

"Modernising mobile financial services infrastructure is essential to supporting the continued growth of digital financial ecosystems," says Hossam Kandeel, head of mobile money and business development at Ericsson West and Southern Africa.

Kandeel adds: "Through the Ericsson Fintech Platform, we have helped MTN Group Fintech establish a cloud-native foundation that improves operational efficiency, strengthens platform performance, and enables the scalability needed to support future innovation and financial inclusion.”

By reducing infrastructure overhead and improving API responsiveness, the high-availability platform allows MTN MoMo to scale for future growth while ensuring a consistent user experience.

Building on these deployments, the companies are advancing similar evolution initiatives in additional markets, starting with an ongoing project in Cameroon, alongside active discussions to introduce the transformation path to Benin, the Republic of the Congo, and Zambia.
