Egypt has revealed that it plans to play a pivotal role in advancing artificial intelligence (AI) for public good across the Middle East and Africa region, and that ambition is backed by a national roadmap for AI-driven transformation.

This is according to a statement from the country’s minister of communications and information technology, Amr Talaat, which comes ahead of the Ai Everything MEA event, to be run in Egypt.

The event, to be held in February 2026, will be hosted by Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and Information Technology Industry Development Agency, and GITEX GLOBAL.

The minister noted that AI is rapidly transforming the architecture of global competitiveness, as such, Egypt is determined to not only adapt to this shift – but to shape it.

“Our National AI Strategy reflects a bold vision: to position Egypt as a leading force in responsible AI adoption, policy innovation, and inclusive digital development,” he said.

Concurrently, MCIT announced the launch of a national tech contest, called Digitopia, which already has over 25 000 contestants registered for the first edition. The competition is open to participants who range from 10-year-old students to entrepreneurs up to age 35.

With total prizes worth over $205 000 (EGP 10 million), including a top award of over $20 500 (EGP 1 million), the contest has attracted more than 6 500 teams from across Egypt. Teams will compete in digital tracks, including software and AI solutions, digital arts and gaming, and cyber security.
