Chikwama Pay, a South African fintech, is partnering with global issuer-processor Paymentology to launch a WhatsApp-enabled neobank with fully inte-grated borderless payment processing across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

According to Paymentology, the move aims to provide secure, seamless, and affordable financial services to millions of underserved people.

The initiative enables customers to bank, borrow, insure, save, and transact directly through WhatsApp, without the need for a separate app, targeting migrant workers, informal traders, and women who are often excluded from traditional financial services, as well as underserved communities who need reliable, low-cost access to cross-border financial services.

Through the partnership, Chikwama Pay will leverage Paymentology’s cloud-first issuing and processing platform to issue and process debit cards with real-time transaction management.

Kesheni Moodley, regional director at Paymentology, said: “Their (Chikwama) model demonstrates how familiar digital channels can be used to broaden access to financial services, and we look forward to supporting their expansion across the SADC region.”

Alestair Mawoneke, CEO at Chikwama Pay, added: "Our mission is to remove the barriers of geography, cost, and complexity in African finance.

"With Paymentology’s global expertise and secure infrastructure, we can now scale faster, expand across borders, and provide truly borderless financial services to millions who have long been excluded."
