Global payments technology company ACI Worldwide has extended its nearly two-decade partnership with UBX Tanzania, the country’s national payment service provider, to strengthen digital payments infrastructure and support the next phase of East African country's digital economy.
The companies said the extended agreement will allow UBX Tanzania to nearly double its payment-processing capacity over the next five years through a high-availability infrastructure spanning two Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard-compliant data centres.
UBX Tanzania currently provides core payments infrastructure for 18 banks in the country, supporting more than 250 ATMs and processing over 1.3 million transactions each month.
The expansion comes as Tanzania’s real-time digital payments market records rapid growth.
According to the Bank of Tanzania, the Tanzania Instant Payments System processed transactions worth $11.6 billion (TSh29.9 trillion) in 2024, more than double the $4.9 billion (TSh12.5 trillion) recorded the previous year.
The agreement will also allow UBX Tanzania to serve merchants directly, launch additional services such as digital wallets, and onboard more financial institutions, expanding its market reach while reducing operational complexity and costs.
Seronga Wangwe, managing director and CEO of UBX Tanzania Limited, said growing demand for digital payments required continued infrastructure investment.
He said: “As Tanzania’s payments landscape continues to grow in scale and complexity, we need infrastructure that is not only reliable but also adaptable to future demands.
"ACI gives us the confidence to expand our services, support more institutions, and continue delivering secure, high-performance and always-on payment experiences that underpin economic activity across the country.”
Nick Craig, general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at ACI Worldwide, said the extended partnership reflected a long-standing relationship built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to advancing digital payment transformation in Tanzania.
Craig added that ACI Worldwide would continue supporting UBX Tanzania’s plans to build an inclusive and sustainable payments ecosystem that promotes financial inclusion and long-term economic growth.
