Internet solutions provider AccessKenya Group has acquired additional international broadband capacity on the SEACOM undersea cable to help it connect all 47 counties in Kenya.

AccessKenya in a statement says it has purchased additional capacity on SEACOM’s STM-4 line.

SEACOM operates a 17,000km subsea broadband cable that connects Africa’s eastern coastline to Europe and Southern Asia.

Raymond Macharia, AccessKenya’s chief technical officer, says the purchase helps the company diversity its undersea fibre routes.

As a result, the company says it has alternative paths through Mumbai and South Africa, “which are helpful when Middle Eastern routes are unstable.”

“To date, AccessKenya has deployed capacity of above 3.5 gigabytes giving us excellent and guaranteed service delivery options. With capacity on TEAMS, Seacom and Eassy cables we see this as a great value proposition to the market as we grow our services”, said Macharia.

The company adds in a statement that Kisii county went live on the AccessKenya wireless network this week after the Isiolo county was connected in January 2014.

AccessKenya has plans to connect a further 13 counties this year to its wireless, metro and national fibre connections. The company says it added seven counties to its network in 2013.

AccessKenya is owned by South African headquartered Dimension Data.
