The world’s biggest social network Facebook says it has notched up 100 million monthly users in Africa.

“As of June 2014, there are 100 million people coming to Facebook every month across the African continent, with over 80% on mobile,” says Facebook in a statement released Monday.

According to Internet World Stats, Africa had 240 million online users at the end of 2013.

This means that almost half of Africa’s internet users are using Facebook, says the social network in its press statement.

Growth of Facebook in Africa has been documented by the likes of South African technology research firm World Wide Worx.

World Wide Worx last year released statistics claiming that Facebook had surged to over 9 million users in South Africa, meaning that it has surpassed the country’s previous leading social network Mxit.

Nicola Mendelsohn, EMEA VP at Facebook, notes in a statement: “In countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, Turkey, and elsewhere, mobile devices are increasingly the way people find new information, and share their new experiences in the world.”

“We also know that people will experience Facebook in unique ways across the world, especially in high-growth regions like Africa," she says.

Since launching in 2004, Facebook has grown into the world’s biggest social network with 1.23 billion monthly active users at the end of 2013.
