The government of Botswana is opening its arms to the potential that artificial intelligence can have to help the country’s development.

“Our government is dedicated to promoting public awareness and understanding of AI technologies. By engaging in open dialogue and fostering an environment of knowledge sharing, we can demystify AI and empower our citizens to embrace its potential benefits,” says Nonofo Kgaodi, acting coordinator, Digital Transformation Coordination Office, Ministry of Communications, Knowledge and Technology.

He says AI has the potential to reshape various industries and contribute significantly to the nation's progress.

“One of the key areas where AI can make a significant impact is in the area of education, which is a basic need of all,” says Kgaodi.

He adds that AI has the potential to create personalised learning experiences tailored to each student's unique needs.

“By integrating AI driven solutions into our education system, we can better prepare our workforce for the demands of the knowledge-based economy and ensure that our nation remains competitive in the global market,” says Kgaodi.

In addition, he highlights that AI-driven research and development have the power to fuel innovation and knowledge creation in various industries.

Kgaodi says government is focused towards being a producer and not a receiver of a technology.

“Our government is dedicated to investing in the education and training of our workforce.”

Further, the government says it is committed to creating an environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.

“By supporting start-ups and small businesses, we can facilitate growth of a vibrant AI ecosystem in Botswana.”

Currently the government of Botswana is running its One Citizen programme, which aims to digitise government services, and provide an opportunity for local businesses to collaborate and contribute to the development of a knowledge-based economy.
