Algeria's Djezzy in network upgrade deal
Demand for broadband in Algeria has spurred on local mobile network Djezzy to upgrade its network.
Global connectivity company Alcatel-Lucent says it has won a deal to roll-out its 9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR) solution for Djezzy.
The solution is expected to help Djezzy provide "3G connectivity today and 4G LTE ultra-broadband access in the future."
Djezzy, which is the commercial brand name for Orascom Telecom Algeria (OTA), has 18 million subscribers in the North African country.
"Our customers are demanding ultra-broadband connectivity," says Philip Tohme, chief executive officer of Djezzy, in a statement.
Other details revealed about the microwave solution roll-out include that it is planned to cover 67% of Djezzy's network.
Meanwhile, the 9500 MPR long-haul system is also to provide a path to 10 gigabit-per-second (10G) capacity between microwave towers, says Alcatel-Lucent.
