About nine out of ten youths in Zimbabwe have access to mobile phones, according to a survey carried out by the Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI).

“Access to cellphones is very high amongst youths as almost nine in ten respondents (89%) said they have access to a cellphone,” reads a report accompanying results of the survey which was launched in Harare on Thursday.

The Youth Survey was carried out between 19 and 28 January and covered just over 1,000 youths. Moreover, the youths surveyed were between 18 and 30 years and excluded those staying in police camps and military barracks.

“Roughly seven in every ten of the youths (73%) have access to a cellphone daily, 15% access it once or twice a week and 2% a few times in a month,” the report adds.

It says “about nine in ten (89%) of youths” use cellphones for making and receiving calls while about 85% use mobile phones for sending and receiving text messages.

And other results of the survey say only about 26% of the youths surveyed used the internet to get news while 56% said they frequently used handset accessories such as the camera.

Zimbabwe -- which the World Bank says has a population of close to 13 million -- has three mobile operators: Econet, Telecel and state owned NetOne. Econet has said its network users number 8 million. Meanwhile, Telecel and NetOne have said they have 2.5 million and 2 million respectively.
