MTN Group taps Meta to enhance voice, video calls
MTN Group, Africa's largest telecoms service provider, has teamed up with Mark Zuckerberg's Meta to improve the quality and reliability of voice and video calls on real-time calling apps like WhatsApp in 12 of the company's markets.
The telecom operator announced the partnership this morning, stating that by optimising application-aware networks and network-aware applications, the collaboration intends to provide a more smooth, stable, and high-quality user experience.
According to MTN, the collaboration would improve real-time calling experiences in 12 markets by identifying areas for improvement and executing specific measures.
It went on to say that since Mobile World Congress 2024, MTN and Meta teams have been working together to identify key areas for improvement and implement targeted network optimisations that improve the interaction of mobile networks and real-time calling applications while maintaining efficient traffic delivery.
The company added: “By harnessing data analytics and conducting comprehensive testing, they have successfully created and deployed solutions that significantly enhance the quality of experience for mobile users.
“The first market to implement these enhancements is Nigeria, where early results show notable improvements in key performance indicators (KPIs), including 50% improvement, leading to a better user experience for MTN Nigeria mobile users.”
MTN is Africa's largest mobile network operator, with 288m customers in 18 markets and Nigeria is the group's main source of revenues, accounting for 40% of total earnings.
Yahaya Ibrahim, CTO at MTN Nigeria, said: "This implementation further demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our customers' digital experience. We're pleased with the remarkable improvement in our real-time communication services, reflecting our commitment to innovative customer solutions."
"The collaboration allows us to deploy advanced solutions for an unparalleled real-time experience in Nigeria and showcases our dedication to elevating service quality and improving user experience, while striving for continued efficiency in traffic delivery," added Diego Marí, head of network ecosystems engineering at Meta.
