MTN execs discuss structural reforms with President Bola

The MTN Nigeria delegation, led by Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita, Chairman of Nigerian Operations Ernest Ndukwe, and CEO Karl Olutokun Toriola, recently met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss issues of common interest.

Though little was shared after the meeting, it is widely known that the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria is requesting controlled pricing adjustments from the country's communications regulator.

The MTN team with President Bola on the sidelines of the South Africa-Nigeria Business Roundtable, organised by South Africa's Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Parks Tau.

MTN Nigeria is a major MTN Group subsidiary, accounting for around 27% of all MTN subscribers and roughly 23% of Group service income.

Dr. 'Bosun Tijani, Nigeria's minister of communications, innovation, and digital economy, and Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, minister of industry, trade, and investment, attended the meeting as well.

MTN said it emphasised its support for Nigeria's structural reforms.

The telco also expressed support of Bi-National Commission's aims, as well as the importance of the digital economy in promoting inclusive growth.

In his opening remarks during the meeting, President Cyril Ramaphosa, said: “South Africa and Nigeria need to work closely to shape a strong developmental agenda that ensures better terms for integration of Africa in global trade.

South Africa and Nigeria seek the same things. We seek a global economic order that is fair, inclusive and rules based.

“We seek to develop our people by expanding investment and trade ties with partner countries.

We see in the relationship between South Africa and Nigeria enormous opportunities to pursue these objectives together.”

‘We invite businesses, state-owned companies, development finance institutions and others to be part of this exciting journey to build a prosperous Africa that meets the needs of all its people.”
