Samsung ‘ready’ to supply solar-powered laptops to Kenyan schools

Electronics giant Samsung says it is ready to start supplying solar-powered laptops to Kenyan schools should the incoming government stick to its plan to provide these devices.

Jubilee Coalition, led by president elect Uhuru Kenyatta, had promised in their manifesto that should they form a government, they will make sure that every child entering class one in public school would be entitled to a laptop.

The ambitious project could cost the government at least $165million every year.

And Samsung says that it is ready to bid for the tender should the incoming government stick to its plan.

“That is big for us. We are absolutely excited about the prospect. We will be bidding like all other electronic manufacturers but our advantage will be that we are offering more than just laptops,”said Samsung East Africa business leader Robert Ngeru.

Samsung has been rolling out solar-powered laptops and generators in countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, DRC Congo and Ethiopia.
