SMART Zambia Institute marked International Girls in ICT Day yesterday by introducing the Learn-a-Thon program, which aims to equip schoolgirls with technological skills.
According to SMART Zambia, the initiative strives to close the gender digital divide by training schoolgirls with ICT skills.
Speaking at the International Girls in ICT Day commemoration in Lusaka, Kasali Musenge, chief government technical officer of SMART Zambia Institute, highlighted the persistent challenges that girls and young women face when entering the ICT field, including a lack of skills, which necessitates training.
Over the course of three weeks, participants will learn about cybersecurity, modern artificial intelligence, and data science. The program is aimed at schools around the country.
“Through Smart Zambia, we are also ensuring robust infrastructure support. Already we have 58 Starlink kits deployed to schools under the Ministry of Education to ensure enhanced access to electronic learning. In addition, this year we target to connect 86 to the nationwide area network, further enhancing access to e-learning,” said Musenge.
“We will also continuously support youth resource centres at schools across the country with access to internet connectivity to promote digital inclusion.”
